Which universities are actually restricted for Pakistani applicants, what the refusal rate really is, and which "banned list" circulating on WhatsApp is out of date.

We checked all nine universities on the list everyone is sharing. Eight of them are actively recruiting Pakistani students right now, on their own websites.
That list is costing families applications they could have won. Here is what we could actually verify, and — just as important — what we could not.
The number that changed everything

Around 4 in 10 Pakistani UK study applications are now refused

This is the single most important fact for anyone applying to the UK this year, and most people are working from a figure that is a year out of date.

Home Office data for the year ending March 2026, released 21 May 2026, as analysed by the sector press. The government's own publication confirms Pakistani sponsored-study grants fell 27% year on year but does not publish a refusal-rate table itself — so we mark this corroborated by two independent outlets rather than officially stated.

Why it happened, in one paragraph

From 1 June 2026 a UK university must keep its visa refusal rate below 5% across all its international students, or it risks its licence to sponsor any of them. Pakistan's refusal rate is around 40%. A university that recruits heavily from Pakistan is therefore risking its entire international operation — so several have cut back. This is arithmetic, not politics, and it means more restrictions are likely rather than fewer.

The list everyone is sharing

All nine, checked one by one

In December 2025 a newspaper report named nine UK universities as having halted or scaled back Pakistani admissions. Consultancies across Pakistan still circulate that list. We opened every one of their websites on 21 August 2026.

Glasgow Caledonian University

Actively recruiting Pakistan with sixteen approved agents — but the Home Office register lists it as "subject to action plan", an active compliance measure. Its 2025 pause was course-based, not nationality-based. Worth watching, not avoiding.

No nationality restriction

University of Hertfordshire

Placed on a Home Office action plan in November 2025 over record-keeping and monitoring — not over nationality. The university stated it expects to resolve it within the required timescale.

We could not confirm

Coventry University

The one we would telephone before applying. It holds its sponsor licence, but Pakistan did not appear on its South Asia regional page while India and Bhutan did. We could not tell whether that reflects a real change or simply how the page is built. We are not guessing either way.

What this does and does not mean A public country page is marketing material. It is not a guarantee that a CAS will be issued. Universities can and do restrict intake quietly — through agent memos, course-level caps, higher deposits, tougher screening — while the public page stays welcoming. The only thing that settles it for your case is written confirmation from that university's admissions team for your specific course and intake. Ask for it.
What we did find

Two things that are real, and are not on anybody's list

Licence revoked · 5 August 2026

Bloomsbury Institute cannot sponsor any new international student

Its student sponsor licence was suspended in June 2026 and revoked on 5 August 2026 after it failed the Home Office compliance assessment. We confirmed this against the Home Office register itself, not only the announcement — the institution no longer appears on it.

Why this matters enormously in Pakistan: in 2024/25 roughly 80% of its students were international, and 93% of those were Pakistani. Existing students may continue for a short period, and those who cannot finish will be helped to transfer.

University of Derby has paused recruitment from Pakistan

Confirmed by the university directly, not by rumour. Their spokesperson stated that because refusal rates for Pakistan and Bangladesh are far above the new threshold, they have paused recruitment from these countries while they review their processes.

Students who already hold a CAS may proceed.

This is the only confirmed active Pakistan suspension we could verify — and it is not on the list circulating in Lahore.

The other thing being mis-sold

The two-year post-study visa is not available to most 2026 starters

Here is the part that is being left out The cut-off is the date you apply for the Graduate visa — and you cannot apply until you have finished your course. A master's degree starting in September 2026 does not finish until late 2027. So for almost every student starting a 2026 master's, the two-year route is already out of reach. If anyone is selling you a 2026 intake on the promise of two years afterwards, ask them to explain that arithmetic.

What we could not verify — published deliberately

Every other page you will read on this subject presents itself as complete. Here is where ours is weaker, so you can weigh it:

  • Five of the nine universities' entries on the official sponsor register could not be read — the register file truncated before reaching them. All five are visibly advertising to Pakistan and none is reported to have lost a licence, but we did not confirm their register rows directly.
  • Whether Chester's suspension formally ended. The university has never published a statement imposing or lifting it. The reported end date is now. We cannot tell from public sources whether it expired, was extended, or was overstated originally.
  • No university ever publicly confirmed the December 2025 report. Not one of the nine issued a statement then or since. The original article is behind a paywall we could not read; everything about that list comes from other outlets summarising it.
  • One conflict in the official guidance between the course-completion threshold stated in the text and the one implied by the rating bands. We are not quoting a completion figure until that is resolved.

And the honest note about the lists you are being shown: several Pakistani consultancy websites still publish all nine as banned. Those lists are recycled from the same December 2025 article and contradicted by the universities' own sites. A list that steers you away from a university that would have accepted you costs you a year.
